Boussac: Where the Lady and the Unicorn Was Found, and George Sand's Stones
225 + 100 XP
The castle of Boussac, above the Petite Creuse and open to visitors, is where Prosper Mérimée and George Sand came upon the six panels of the Lady and the Unicorn, the tapestries now at the heart of the Musée du Moyen Âge in Paris; George Sand stayed there several times, and her room on the second floor can be seen. Four kilometres south, the Pierres Jaumâtres are a chaos of granite blocks on the summit of Mont Barlot, 591m, where she set her novel Jeanne in 1844, and three kilometres further on the village of Toulx-Sainte-Croix stands on a granite hill at 655m.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Go up to the second-floor room George Sand used at Boussac, where she wrote Journal d'un voyageur pendant la guerre while sheltering there in 1870, and on the way through the exhibition rooms pick out the 20th-century Aubusson tapestries by Jean Lurçat, Jean Picart Le Doux and Dom Robert against the 17th-century ones
2
of 4
Walk in among the granite blocks on the summit of Mont Barlot at 591 m and decide for yourself which side you are on — Barailon claimed Gaulish druids carved them and George Sand wrote them up as cyclopean temples, while Prosper Mérimée and Pierre de Cessac argued they are frost-weathered granite and nothing more
3
of 4
Climb the observation tower on the Rochers de Brudalis at Toulx-Sainte-Croix, 655 m and the high point of the range, and use the orientation table at the top to pick out the Monts d'Auvergne, the plateaux of the Berry and the Limousin hills in one turn

At the Romanesque church of Toulx-Sainte-Croix, find the bell tower standing separate from the body of the church and the Merovingian stone sarcophagi kept in its lower room

Before you go
The château's season runs from Easter to the Toussaint — 5 April to 1 November in 2026 — open every day, 10am to noon and 2pm to 5pm, with a midday break. Outside that there are no regular visits at all and the owners ask you to try for an appointment by email at chateaudeboussac@orange.fr or on 06 08 43 38 36; even in season the hours are listed as not guaranteed, so a phone call the day before is worth it. The Pierres Jaumâtres and the tower at Toulx-Sainte-Croix are open ground and free at any time of year, but the lane up to the stones is narrow and has no motorhome parking at the top — leave larger vehicles in the village.
