The Gorges de Daluis: The Red Canyon of the Var

In the communes of Daluis and Guillaumes, the Var has cut more than 900m down through red, wine-coloured Permian rocks called pelites to form the Gorges de Daluis, protected since 2012 as a regional nature reserve of 1,082 hectares for its geology, its rare plants, its 84 species of birds and its 25 species of bats.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Drive the gorge road through the wine-red pelite, stop where the walls close in, and put your hand on rock made of volcanic ash and fine sediment laid down more than 250 million years ago and oxidised red — the Var has cut more than 900 m down through it

2

of 5

Park and walk out onto the Pont de la Mariée, now closed to traffic — one of the first reinforced-concrete bridges built in France, raised for the Pont de Gueydan to Guillaumes tramway that ran only from 1923 to 1929 — and look over the parapet where Marie-Louise Pion fell on 30 July 1927, a death the inquiry recorded as an accident and the valley has argued about ever since

3

of 5

On the Point Sublime circuit, about an hour and a quarter from the road, look down the 300 m drops the locals call the Colorado niçois, then on the rock faces find the fossilised current ripples and the dimples left by raindrops that fell on this mud 250 million years ago

4

of 5

On the red rock beside the path, look for the two snails named after it — the maillot des pélites and the marbrée des pélites — which live on this pelite and on no other rock anywhere

5

of 5

From a pull-in on the gorge road, watch the cliffs and name whichever of the golden eagle, peregrine, short-toed snake eagle, eagle owl or wallcreeper you can pick out — the wallcreeper works the rock face itself

Before you go

The Pont de la Mariée is closed to vehicles: park on the road and walk out to it. The bungee jump from it — a drop of about 75 to 80 m depending on which source you read — is run by one operator, in the summer months only and by advance booking, so do not drive up expecting to jump on the day. Inside the reserve, the Clue d'Amen circuit takes about 4 hours 30 and the Point Sublime circuit about 1 hour 15. The gorge road is narrow with tunnels and unprotected drops of up to 300 m, and it is a staged halt on the Route des Grandes Alpes, so expect oncoming motorhomes and motorcycle traffic in summer.
