The Néouvielle Nature Reserve: Lakes Among the Mountain Pines

Created in 1935 and classified in 1968, the Néouvielle national nature reserve covers 2,313 hectares north-east of the Pic de Néouvielle, between 1,800 and 3,091m, and takes in the lakes of Aubert and Aumar; it is bounded to the south by the lakes of Cap-de-Long and Orédon. Its forests are of mountain pine, which grows here up to 2,600m, and its wildlife includes the marmot, the capercaillie, the golden eagle and the bearded vulture.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Walk right round the Lac d'Aumar, the largest natural lake in the reserve at 25 hectares, then work out from the shorelines which of its neighbours are natural and which are dammed — Aubert, Orédon and Cap-de-Long were all raised for hydroelectricity from 1882 onwards

2

of 5

Walk from Aubert down to the lower laquette of Orédon, find the panel that asks walkers to photograph a marked zone to record the water level, take the photograph and send it in — then look in the shallows for the subulaire aquatique, which grows nowhere else in France

3

of 5

In the scattered bosquets above the lakes, pick a cone off a pin à crochets and find the hook on its scales that gives the tree its name, then climb high enough to see the same pine still growing above you — in this reserve it reaches 2,600 m, a European altitude record

4

of 5

At the Lac d'Orédon find the biological station on its shore, built in 1922, thirteen years before Bressou and Chouard got the reserve created — one of the first nature reserves in France

5

of 5

On the grassland between Aumar and the hourquette d'Aubert, find marmots, then scan the ridges and name whichever of the golden eagle, griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture and bearded vulture you can pick out — and at a tarn listen for the midwife toad, which breeds here up to 2,400 m

Before you go

Private vehicles are banned by day on the road between the Lac d'Orédon and the Lac d'Aubert: park in the charged car parks at either lake and take the paid shuttle, which runs irregularly rather than to a timetable, or walk up. Bivouac is forbidden throughout the reserve except in one marked zone below the Aumar dam, so a motorhome stays down at Orédon or lower. The reserve sits between 1,800 and 3,091 m with the lakes on a plateau above 1,800 m — snow lies late and the access road is shut outside the summer and autumn season.
