Domme: The Bastide on the Cliff Above the Dordogne
200 + 100 XP
Domme was founded as a bastide in 1281 by King Philip III the Bold on a plateau where a castle already stood. Perched on a cliff at 210m, it stands more than a hundred metres above the Dordogne, and unlike most bastides its plan is a trapezium rather than a rectangle; it is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Stand at the Belvédère de la Barre, a hundred metres and more straight above the water, and follow the great loop the Dordogne throws below you — the cingle de Montfort — until you can point out where the river comes in and where it leaves
2
of 4
At the Porte des Tours, find the hundred-odd graffiti scratched into the stone of the gate and pick out the circles, triangles and squares among them, then take the guide's Templar reading of them with care: the coded interpretation rests on survey drawings now known to be a forgery, and nobody can say who cut the marks. Walk on from here along the 13th-century rampart towards the Porte de la Combe, the stretch restored with Loto du patrimoine money from 2021
3
of 4
Walk the bastide from gate to gate and prove the trapezium to yourself — the streets will not square up, because the wall was bent to follow the cliff rather than the grid — then find both of its market squares, the Place de la Halle and the Place de la Rode, where the fairs of a town that minted its own coin were held
4
of 4
Go down into the grotte de Domme, which opens under the market hall in the middle of the village, and walk its 450 metres of concretions knowing that the townspeople came down here to hide twice over — in the Hundred Years' War and again in the Wars of Religion

Before you go
The cave is a timed guided visit of about 45 minutes, commentary in French, roughly 10 euros adult and 8 for a child of 5 to 14, free under 5, running from the February holidays to 31 December; book or arrive early in July and August. The village museum, shut since 2020, reopened in August 2025 as the Musée de Domme. The climb to Domme is steep and the gates and lanes are narrow — use the car parks below or on the edge of the bastide rather than driving a van in, and keep hold of children at the Belvédère de la Barre, which is a hundred-metre drop with low walls.
