Ray-sur-Saône: The Château Above the Saône

easy
history

200 + 100 XP

The château of Ray-sur-Saône, a 10th-century fortress rebuilt in classical style in the 18th century, stands on a rocky spur tens of metres above the river in a village listed as a Cité de Caractère of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Diane-Regina de Salverte, the thirty-third generation over ten centuries of the same line to live in it, gave the château to the Haute-Saône department on 29 May 2015; Wikipedia calls it in perfect condition, and its park, itself a listed monument, is open free. Among its treasures are two lacquer chests given as wedding presents by James Francis Stuart, the pretender to the English crown.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Walk the free park Eugène Bühler laid out in the 1870s: enter by the Louis XV gateway dated 1734 that the Salverte family brought from Auxonne, follow the straight avenue between its double rows of Dutch limes, purple beeches and yews, and carry on to the stand of rare exotic trees planted at the north end in 1880, which hides the burial vault of the lords of Ray

2

of 4

Go down to the terraces that step south from the château among the old ramparts, tens of metres above the river, and from them pick out the two semi-circular towers left of the enceinte — the tour Tranchée and the tour du Guet — and the rebuilt postern beside them

3

of 4

Walk the castral bourg on the flank of the château — in the 15th century a single village street of about thirty timber and stone houses — and find the gate, still open, that leads to the lord's working buildings set along the curtain wall: press, oven, hayloft and barns, with the half-round tower that was turned into a dovecote in 1591

4

of 4

On the guided tour of the rooms, find the two lacquer chests that came as wedding presents from Jacques François Stuart, the pretender to the English crown, to François-Philippe de Marmier and Marguerite Hamilton, and read the family motto cut at the foot of the great chimney in the hall of arms — Ante omnia sylvae, before all else the forests

Before you go

The rooms can only be seen on a guided tour, and only in season: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 2.30pm and 4.15pm in May, June, September and October, and Wednesday to Sunday in July and August with an extra 10.30am tour. The department asks you to book on 03 84 95 77 37 or chateauderay@haute-saone.fr. Full price is 7 euros, 5 over 65, 3 for a 45-minute express visit, free under 18. Out of season only the park is open — free access, 9am to 5pm — so a November visit means the park, the terraces and the village, not the lacquer chests.
