Noyers-sur-Serein: Seventy-Eight Listed Buildings in a Bend of the River
200 + 100 XP
Noyers stands in a sharp meander of the Serein, whose valley cuts deep into the limestone plateau, and it has 78 listed buildings, most of them from the 15th century and barely altered since; it is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France and was voted seventh Village préféré des Français in 2014. At the end of the 12th century Hugues de Noyers, bishop of Auxerre, had its castle rebuilt as a fortress with a triple wall — a chronicle of the day called it one of the proudest castles in France, and more than eighty fiefs answered to its keep — and the town was walled; in 1217 it held out against a siege by Blanche of Navarre's troops. Louis de Condé, who gained the lordship by marriage in 1565, took refuge here in 1568 in the Wars of Religion and had to flee Catherine de' Medici's armies. The squares still carry their trade names: the Place du Marché-au-Blé, the Place de la Petite-Étape-aux-Vins, the Place du Grenier-à-Sel.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Find all three of the squares that still carry the trade that filled them — the Place du Marché-au-Blé for grain, the Place de la Petite-Étape-aux-Vins for wine and the Place du Grenier-à-Sel for salt — and work out which of the three kept the best houses round it
2
of 5
Follow the ramparts round the meander through the lanes of barely altered 15th-century houses and count the towers: nineteen of the original twenty-three are still standing. Go through both surviving gates — the square Porte Peinte, also called the porte d'Avallon, and the Porte de Tonnerre with its roof of lava stone — and find the 16th-century Burgundian polychrome Virgin standing in the niche of the second
3
of 5
Climb out of the village to the spur above it and stand in the ruins of the castle — the triple-walled fortress Hugues de Noyers, bishop of Auxerre, had built at the end of the 12th century, which more than eighty fiefs answered to and which held off Blanche of Navarre's besiegers in 1217
4
of 5
Put a canoe or kayak on the Serein, which is navigable here, and paddle the sharp meander the whole medieval town sits inside, passing under the ramparts and their towers from the one side nobody walks

On the façade of the old collège, founded in 1633, find the high-precision sundial of 1715 and read its Latin motto beginning « Quis melior vitae monitor » — what better guide to our life — then walk down to the arcaded 19th-century lavoir on the Serein and see whether the sundial and your watch agree

Before you go
No source names a boat-hire operator in Noyers itself — bring your own canoe or book with a hire base elsewhere on the Serein, and check the level first, as this is a small river. The castle on the spur is ruins rather than a visitor site, and the lanes of the old town are narrow and stone-walled: park outside the medieval core rather than driving a motorhome into it.
