Pont-en-Royans: The Hanging Houses Over the Bourne

Pont-en-Royans, in the western Vercors, stands at the confluence of the Bourne and the Vernaison, and its hanging houses, clinging to the rock above the Bourne, still draw visitors in summer; in the 19th century there were three times as many of them over the gorge, until they were pulled down to widen the road. The Halle Jean Gattégno, with its art centre and intercommunal library, now stands on the site of the hanging houses, and the Musée de l'Eau, in an old silk mill and electrical works by the river, closed on 1 October 2026 for a rebuild lasting until 2029.

Required Activities

1

of 4

From the riverbank below the bridge, look up at the maisons suspendues hanging off the rock, then work out how much of the gorge wall is now bare: there were three times as many of these houses over the gouffre in the 19th century before they were knocked down to widen the road for the timber carts

2

of 4

Climb the stepped medieval lanes to the Tour de l'Horloge, the one surviving gate of the old ramparts, then stand on the bridge — barely three metres wide — and look down into the gouffre Picard, a hollow about ten metres deep in the Bourne underneath it

3

of 4

Go into the Halle Jean Gattégno on the Grande Rue, built on the ground the demolished hanging houses once stood on, and see what is hanging in its art centre alongside an intercommunal library of some 140,000 items

Drive or ride the first few kilometres of the route des gorges de la Bourne east out of the village towards Choranche — a corbelled road cut straight into the rock face, rated three stars by Michelin — and stop where the Bourne runs directly beneath the overhang

Before you go

The Musée de l'Eau is closed for rebuilding from 1 October 2026 until 2029 — do not plan the day around it. The route des gorges de la Bourne is a narrow corbelled road cut into the cliff with a long accident record and safety works running since 2008; it is poor ground for a long or wide motorhome, and the village bridge itself is barely three metres wide.
