Porquerolles: The National Park Island
250 + 100 XP
Porquerolles has belonged to the French state since 1971 and has had national park status since 2012, when a decree of 6 May brought parts of the island and the sea around it inside the terrestrial and marine cores of the Port-Cros national park; the park has managed most of the island since 1971 and, since 1979, the national Mediterranean botanical conservatory there. The island runs as an east-west arc 7.5 km long and 3 km wide, with some thirty kilometres of coast and a high point of 142 m at the semaphore: its north coast is lined with sandy beaches backed by pines, heather and scented myrtle, while its south coast drops steeply to the sea.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Pick one of the island's two circuits and finish it: east on the easy track to the long beaches of la Courtade and Notre-Dame, or west on the harder one over the mont de Tiélo and the montagne de Robert to the plage d'Argent and the calanque du Maure — and on either, climb to the semaphore at 142 m, the highest point on the island
2
of 5
Walk out to the col du Langoustier at 43 m, look down on the two beaches below it, and then swim off each in turn: the white sand, and the black sand that takes its colour from the waste of the soda works that ran here on the Leblanc process until 1876
3
of 5
Climb to the 16th-century château Sainte-Agathe above the village and find the damage from 1793, when an English admiral sheltering his fleet here was asked to dinner by a French commandant who had no idea what was happening on the mainland — while the Frenchman was being plied with drink, English sailors landed, cleared out the garrison and blew the fort up
4
of 5
Walk the collections of the national Mediterranean botanical conservatory, which the park has run here since 1979, and find the flax-leaved broom, Genista linifolia, native to Porquerolles and otherwise growing only in the Canaries, Iberia, Italy and North Africa

of 5
In the village, laid out from 1820 at the head of the bay, go into the church of Sainte-Anne of 1850 and work along the stations of the cross an anonymous soldier cut into them with a knife, then find the 18th-century windmill above the village and the lighthouse of 1837

Before you go
Porquerolles is reached by boat from the tour Fondue at the end of the Giens peninsula, 2.6 km offshore, a crossing of about fifteen minutes run all year by TLV-TVM — but with six sailings a day in winter against as many as nineteen in summer, so check the day's last boat back before you set off on a circuit. Leave the vehicle on the mainland: no motor vehicles are allowed on the island except service ones. Camping and bivouac are banned, and so are fires and cigarettes anywhere outside the village. Dogs must be on a lead on the paths and are banned from every beach. Hire a bike at the port if you want to cover the island in a day.
