Soissons: The City of the Vase, the Towers of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes and the Cathedral
200 + 100 XP
Soissons is known as the city of the Vase, after the much-told story of the vase of Soissons that followed Clovis's defeat of Syagrius here in 486; Clovis made the town his capital until 508. Of the abbey of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes, whose bell towers and cloisters were listed in 1875, the church itself was pulled down for its stone from 1809 and only the west front with its two towers, the refectory and the cellar survive. The cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais keeps an unusual south transept with four storeys instead of three, and the abbey of Saint-Léger, with a Romanesque crypt of about 1100 under its Gothic church, now holds the town museum.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Stand in front of the west front and work out which tower is which: the great tower finished between 1488 and 1495, the smaller one between 1516 and 1520, then walk round the back to see that there is no church behind them at all
2
of 4
Stand in the rounded south transept, the oldest part of the cathedral, and count its four storeys from the floor up — great arcades, tribunes, triforium, clerestory — then cross to the north transept to find Rubens's Adoration of the Shepherds and Philippe de Champaigne's Giving of the Keys to Saint Peter of 1624
3
of 4
Go down into the Romanesque crypt of about 1100 that survives under the Gothic church of Saint-Léger, then in the museum upstairs find the reliquary plan of the town and pick out on it the abbey of Notre-Dame that the Revolution destroyed, of which only two Romanesque arches are left near the church of Saint-Pierre
4
of 4
Hunt the vases: start with the monument that has stood on the place Fernand-Marquigny since 1935, find Guy Lartigue's 1998 sculpture in copper, brass, granite and stainless steel, and then see how many more representations of the vase you can spot around the streets

Before you go
The Saint-Jean-des-Vignes ruins are freely open in the fine season; out of season the towers are still seen from the street. A consolidation programme on the two towers began in 2016 and was planned to run about ten years, so expect scaffolding and fenced-off ground. The Musée Saint-Léger is closed on Mondays, on 25 December and 1 January, and shuts between 12h and 14h on weekdays, opening only in the afternoon at weekends.
