Landerneau: The Inhabited Bridge and the Grocer's Cultural Foundation

Landerneau grew up at the head of the Élorn estuary, where the tide ends and the last bridge crosses the river. The Pont de Rohan, rebuilt in 1510 by Viscount Jean II of Rohan and lined with small houses from the 17th century, is one of the oldest of the nineteen inhabited bridges left in Europe; its 67 m run from the quai de Léon to the quai de Cornouaille once carried two shops, a mill, a prison, a fishery, a chapel and a guardroom. In December 1949 Édouard Leclerc, born in the town, opened a grocery in the kitchen of his house at 13 rue des Capucins with 5,000 francs of capital — the start of the Leclerc stores. Further up the same street he later bought part of the Capuchin domain, where a Leclerc store traded until 1986 and where he and his wife founded the Fonds Hélène et Édouard Leclerc pour la Culture, opened on 23 June 2012.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Cross the 67 m of the Pont de Rohan from the quai de Léon to the quai de Cornouaille, and at the Cornouaille end find the Renaissance house the magistrate Jacques Gillart built in 1639 in Logonna stone, with its foundations raised in the river bed itself to avoid paying for land

2

of 5

At the Fonds Hélène et Édouard Leclerc pour la Culture, work out where the 17th-century Capuchin convent stops and the old supermarket hall begins — the 1,600 m² shed was refaced in ocre-blond Logonna microgranite and roofed in slate, and 1,200 m² of it is now gallery

3

of 5

On the place Saint-Thomas, count the thirteen human-faced moons on the string course of the Maison de la Lune, the late-16th-century merchant's manor in Logonna stone that is a maison à pondalez inside

4

of 5

At the old ossuary of Saint-Cadou beside Saint-Thomas, dated 1635, find the round-arched openings either side of the door that let people outside throw holy water onto the bones kept within

Walk up the rue des Capucins to number 13, the house where the first Leclerc shop opened in December 1949 selling nothing but Labour biscuits out of stacked crates on the floor, then compare it with the size of the Capuchin site his business had grown into by 1986

Before you go

The Fonds Hélène et Édouard Leclerc pour la Culture is not a permanent museum: it shows one or two exhibitions a year and closes completely between them, sometimes for months. Check what is on before you build a day around it.

The Pont de Rohan is a working street with houses on it. The parallel concrete bridge of 1958 carries the traffic, so cross the old bridge on foot; there is nowhere on it to stop a vehicle.

The quays and the old centre are tight for a motorhome. Use the car parks on the edge of the centre and walk in.
