Saint-Véran and Fort Queyras: The Highest Village in the Alps and the Castle on the Rock

Saint-Véran, in the regional nature park of the Queyras, has its church at 2,042m and is reputed to be the highest permanently inhabited place in the French Alps; it is listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France. Its houses are topped with fustes, upper storeys of stacked larch logs under shingle roofs, one of which holds the Soum museum of peasant life in a house of 1641, and a score of painted sundials are scattered across the village walls, the best known of them signed by Zarbula in 1840. Down the valley, Fort Queyras, a castle of the second half of the 13th century remodelled by Vauban after 1695, blocks the Guil valley from the top of a glacial lock and is open to visitors.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Among the score of painted wall sundials in Saint-Véran, find the one on the church wall and read its Occitan motto, Lou plus aouto coumunoutas inte se mangeu lou pan de Diou — the highest commune where the bread of God is eaten — and the dial the painter Zarbula signed in 1840 on a house in the Forannes quarter, protected since 1996

2

of 4

In Le Soum, the museum of peasant life inside a fuste built in 1641, work out the plan of a house-farm where people and animals wintered together: the fougagno or kitchen, the carotto or cellar, and the vaulted peil built against the kitchen wall

3

of 4

Climb the glacial lock that blocks the Guil valley to Fort Queyras and trace what Vauban added after the Savoyard assault of 1695 — an entirely new enceinte on the north-east with escarp, ditch, counterscarp and demi-lune — then find the casemated batteries cut in during the mid-19th century

of 4

Pick one old house in the village and read it from the ground up: stone walls 50 to 70 cm thick below, the fuste of larch trunks stacked and crossed at the corners above, a roof of larch shingles, and beside it the little stone caset under its lauze slabs

Before you go

Fort Queyras is privately owned — it was sold at auction in Gap in 2021 and is due 500,000 euros of Loto du patrimoine funding in 2026 — so check opening before counting on going inside; only the ramparts and the outside of the buildings carry the 1948 protection. Saint-Véran's chapels open to the public once a week in summer only. The village sits at 2,042 m and the commune's low point is 1,756 m, so expect mountain weather and snow cover in winter; the astronomical observatory above the village is at 3,000 m and is a serious walk, not a stroll.
