Paray-le-Monial and Charolles: A Small Cluny, the Sacred Heart and the Venice of the Charolais
225 + 100 XP
The basilica of Paray-le-Monial, a priory of Cluny, gives a complete image of the lost abbey church of Cluny on a smaller scale, with three naves instead of five, and draws some 450,000 visitors a year, more than any other site in Saône-et-Loire. Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque, a nun of the town's Visitation monastery, reported a first vision of the Sacred Heart on 27 December 1673 and her most famous one in June 1675, and Paray became the centre of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Twelve kilometres east, Charolles, which gave its name to the Charolais country and so to the cattle, stands where the Semence meets the Arconce and is known for its faience and its canals.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Walk the basilica counting what Cluny had twice over: three naves here against five there, a single transept instead of a double one, three radiating chapels instead of five — then find the sharp drop in floor level between the apse and the ambulatory
2
of 5
In the chapel of the Visitation, find the reliquary holding Margaret Mary's remains, and the monastery garden where the first chapel over the visions was raised in 1687, a year after the first altar to the Heart of Jesus
3
of 5
Start at the place de la Balance at Charolles, where the Semence splits into two arms, and walk the peninsula they and the Arconce enclose — the château and the old Clarisses convent on the high ground, the church below — crossing as many as you can of the three bridges on the Arconce and five on the Semence
4
of 5
Among the basilica's acanthus-leaf capitals, pick out the animals: two with eagles, seven with lions, and the three narrative capitals nobody has settled the meaning of

At Charolles, find the Molin works, the traditional art faience still made in the town, and taste the Bœuf de Charolles that carries its own appellation d'origine

Before you go
Charolles holds its town market and a sheep market on Wednesday mornings, and the Festival du bœuf, with a show of some 600 cattle, on the first weekend of December.
The sanctuary welcome and the guided side of a visit run 10am to midday and 3pm to 5pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday afternoons only, with longer hours in summer, so allow for the two-hour midday break. Both the basilica and the chapel are places of worship with mass at 11am on weekdays and 6.30pm most evenings, and visiting gives way to the service. The canals at Charolles are 12 km east and open at any hour.
