Brousse-le-Château: The Castle on the Rock Where the Alrance Meets the Tarn

The castle of Brousse, first recorded in 935, was built on a rocky spur where the Alrance meets the Tarn to guard the crossing — the one obligatory ford for the whole Rouergue, on which its lords levied a toll called the pezade. The Arpajon family held it for five centuries from 1204, it was remodelled in the 16th century, sold to the commune in 1839, restored from 1963 onwards by an association called the Vallée de l'Amitié, and is now run by the village's foyer rural. The village below, listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, keeps its gothic Pont Vieux over the Alrance and the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur, and the Tarn borders the commune for more than seven kilometres through the gorges called the Raspes.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Go up into the castle through the gate on the village side and the vaulted passage hacked out of the living rock behind it, then find the towers by name — the Prisoner's, the Princess's, the open-gorge tower holding the north-west point — and stand on the foundations of the tour Picarde, which at 45 m was the tallest tower in the whole Rouergue before it came down

2

of 4

Cross the gothic Pont Vieux over the Alrance, just above its meeting with the Tarn, and on the far side look hard at the 17th and 18th-century houses beside it: lauze slabs on the roofs and walls built of three different stones — sandstone, gneiss and schist — all quarried within sight of the bridge

3

of 4

Go into the fortified church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur in the village, then out into the cemetery that adjoins it and find the small oratory standing among the graves — listed as a monument in its own right on the same day as the church, in 1937

4

of 4

Drive or walk out to the church of Saint-Cirice at la Vayssière, on its promontory inside a meander of the Tarn, and from there follow the line of the Raspes gorge with your eye for as much of its seven kilometres as the bends will let you see

Before you go

The castle is run by the village's foyer rural and opens around its temporary exhibitions rather than to fixed year-round hours, so check locally before climbing up. Both the Tarn and the Alrance flood here — seven declared natural disasters between 1992 and 2015 — so do not park a van low on the bank in heavy rain, and the approach on the RD 54 and RD 143 is narrow and steep down into the village.

The castle shuts after 11 November and reopens in mid-February — in 2026 on 18 February — so there is nothing to climb up to in December or January, and outside July and August it only opens in the afternoon and only Wednesday to Sunday. It is run by a volunteer association, so ring 05 65 99 45 40 if the day matters. The Pont Vieux and the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur in the village below are open whenever you come, and the lanes down to the bridge are steep and cobbled.
