Montluçon: The Castle of the Dukes of Bourbon and 3,500 Instruments at the MuPop

Louis II, duke of Bourbon, made Montluçon a fortress: he raised the walls, dug moats fed by the waters of the Amaron, built four gates and rebuilt both the castle and the church of Notre-Dame, and he died in the castle on 10 August 1410. The castle has belonged to the town since 1913 and is its emblem. Below it, in the hôtels Charnisay and Méchain, the MuPop, the museum of popular music, opened on the Fête de la Musique, 21 June 2013, and holds 3,500 instruments — the largest collection of musical instruments and objects in France from the middle of the 18th century onwards, from bagpipes to electric guitars.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Climb the old streets to the esplanade of the castle of the dukes of Bourbon, where flint tools twelve thousand years old have been dug out of the ground, and look out over the Cher from the one spot in Montluçon that has been occupied in every age since

2

of 4

Work the MuPop's 200 listening points, and track the museum's own history through its cases: it began in the 1960s as a museum of the vielle alone, then took in bagpipes, then electric guitars — find a hurdy-gurdy and an electric guitar and decide which one the building was really built for

3

of 4

In the church of Notre-Dame on its own square, find the north apsidal chapel — late 12th-century masonry left standing from the Romanesque church when Louis II rebuilt the rest in the 15th and 16th centuries on the same east–west line

4

of 4

From the street outside the MuPop, compare its two old town houses: the hôtel Charnisay restored as it stood, and the hôtel Méchain wrapped in a modern skin because too little of it had survived, with a concrete entrance block bridging the two

Before you go

The MuPop closes for the whole of January for maintenance and reopens on 1 February, and it is shut every Monday and on 1 May and 25 December. From September to May it is an afternoon museum, 2pm to 6pm, with mornings only for booked groups — so a winter morning in Montluçon gets you the castle and the church but not the 3,500 instruments. The Mal-Coiffée tower and Notre-Dame are up the hill from the museum in the old town, and cost nothing.
