Grand Colombier: One of the Hardest Climbs in France, and the Jura's First Hors Catégorie
400 + 100 XP
The Grand Colombier rises to 1,531m at the southern end of the Jura, straight above Culoz, and cyclists count its road pass at 1,498m among the hardest climbs in France, with gradients well above 10% for kilometre after kilometre and more than 1,200m of ascent. The road from Culoz climbs 18.3km at an average of 6.9% along the cliff above the town, and the Tour de France first took it in 2012, graded hors catégorie — the first climb in the Jura ever given that grade. From the top the view drops 1,250m to the Rhône valley and the Lac du Bourget and reaches east to the Alps.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Take the Culoz road, 18.3 km at 6.9 %, from the junction at 244 m, and find the sign on the cliff section that reads 14 % — then use the two kilometres of near-flat at 3 % that follow, just before the Anglefort road joins at 878 m, as the only rest the mountain gives you
2
of 4
At the col, cross the cattle grids that stop the herds walking out onto the road and look for the summit cross they announce, then work out from the pass which of the four roads that meet here — two from the west, two from the east — you would least like to have come up
3
of 4
Walk both tops from the col: 500 m south to the true summit of the Grand Colombier at 1,531 m, and 300 m north to the Croix du Colombier at 1,525 m, and judge from the ground which of the two feels higher
4
of 4
From the top, pick out the Rhône valley 1,250 m below you, the Lac du Bourget beyond it, and — harder — the point where the Rhône breaks out of the gorges of the Val du Fier, then turn east and name the Alpine summits on the skyline

Before you go
All four roads to the col are shut for the winter, usually from November to the second half of April — in 2025–26 from 19 November to 27 March — and individual sides also close for rockfall works, as the Culoz road did through the summer of 2026 until 3 September. Check the Ain road status before committing to the drive. The climb is exposed and barely shaded on the Culoz side, so it is punishing in heat.
