Aigues-Mortes: Saint Louis's Walled Port, the Tour de Constance and the Pink Salt Pans

Louis IX built the port of Aigues-Mortes around 1241 to give France an outlet on the Mediterranean of its own — Marseille belonged to his brother, Agde to the count of Toulouse and Montpellier to the king of Aragon — and sailed from it on crusade in 1248 and again in 1270, dying of dysentery outside Tunis. The Tour de Constance, 22 m across and 32 m to its terrace under an 11 m watch turret, went up between 1242 and 1254; his son Philippe le Hardi ordered the walls closed right round the town in 1272 and they took thirty years to finish. Beyond them the salt pans run pink.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Climb the Tour de Constance to the salle des chevaliers and find the word REGISTER — resist — cut into the kerb of the well and still legible, credited to Marie Durand, shut in here at 19 and let out 38 years later; look up in the guard room below at the dome in twelve segments on its slender columns, then go out on the terrace to the iron cage on the watch turret, 13th-century ironwork that held the fire that guided ships in

2

of 4

Walk the full circuit of the walls on the rampart walk and from the north side pick out the Tour Carbonnière standing alone out in the marsh, the watchtower that guarded the only road in — then work out from up there why the town is called dead waters, and why its people once asked Saint Louis to give it a better name

3

of 4

Ride the little train out through the salt pans of the Salin d'Aigues-Mortes and work out the sequence: which basins are still sea water, which have gone pink as the salt-loving micro-algae take over, and which have crystallised out white — finishing at the camelles, the mountains of harvested salt

4

of 4

Find the memorial in the town to the Italian salt workers killed here in the massacre of August 1893, and read how a dispute in the salt pans outside the walls turned into a lynching in the streets inside them

Before you go

The Tour de Constance and the rampart walk are one ticketed visit run by the Centre des monuments nationaux, with a closed day and reduced winter hours; the tower is a spiral stair with no lift. The little train through the salt pans runs 1h15 and only on published date blocks through the year, with gaps of several weeks — book ahead and check the calendar, since turning up is not enough. Adult tickets are around 14 euros, children 10. The pans are flat, white and treeless: take hats and water, and expect mosquitoes at dusk.
