Chartres: The Blue Glass of Notre-Dame, the Labyrinth and the Maison Picassiette
250 + 100 XP
Chartres cathedral got its royal portal about 1145–1150; after the fire of 10 June 1194 the church we see was rebuilt in roughly thirty years, 1194 to 1225, and consecrated on 24 October 1260. It was among the first French monuments UNESCO listed, in 1979, and is traditionally counted one of the best-preserved Gothic cathedrals for its sculpture, its glass and its paving. The 13th-century glass fills ninety-four bays, glowing with Chartres blue; the labyrinth in the nave floor, a 12th-century work in pale Berchères stone against black marble, is 12.89 m across and unwinds a single path of 261.55 m. Across town, the cemetery sweeper Raymond Isidore covered his house, the Maison Picassiette, in broken crockery from 1938 until 1962, and from April the town's buildings are lit up at night.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Find the two sets of glass that came through the 1194 fire — the three bays above the west portal, the oldest in the building, and Notre-Dame de la Belle Verrière, rescued and reset in the ambulatory — then look for the gaps in the choir where the canons smashed a dozen windows in 1757 because they wanted more light, and finish at the new windows the Korean artist Bang Hai Ja made for the lower Saint-Piat chapel in 2022
2
of 5
On a Friday between Lent and All Saints, when the chairs come off the nave floor, walk the labyrinth right to its centre and back out again — the way it was meant to be done — then follow the line facing you up towards the choir and the altar, and see how the west rose lands exactly on the labyrinth when you project it onto the paving
3
of 5
At the Maison Picassiette, find the Palestinian woman to the left of the front door and her pendant the Frenchwoman on the right, then the mosaic of the cathedral, the chapel and summer lodging Isidore built between 1953 and 1956, the cour noire, and in the garden the tomb of the Spirit he finished in 1962 — two years before he died. He had been the town's roadmender and then the cemetery sweeper, and picked the plates out of the local tips himself
4
of 5
After dark, walk the Chartres en Lumières circuit and count how many of its twenty-four lit sites you can find in one evening, starting with the projections on the cathedral's west front

Walk the outside of the choir screen and work your way through its forty carved groups — two hundred figures in all — picking out the scenes you can name before you reach the end

Before you go
Chartres en Lumières lights up the town's buildings at night from April to October.
The labyrinth can only be walked on Fridays, 10:30 to 17:00, from Lent to All Saints, and not at all on Good Friday or during services — on any other day the nave floor is under chairs and the pattern can only be looked at. Time the visit for a Friday if walking it matters. The cathedral is in a long restoration campaign with further work starting in 2027, so expect scaffolding over part of the glass. Chartres en Lumières is free and runs nightly from mid-April; the Maison Picassiette belongs to the town's musée des Beaux-Arts and keeps museum hours, closing out of season.
