The Souleuvre Viaduct: Bungee Jumping from Eiffel's Pillars
300 + 100 XP
The Souleuvre viaduct was built between 1887 and 1889 to plans from Gustave Eiffel's design office, carrying a single railway track from Caen and Saint-Lô to Vire across the Souleuvre: 364.20 m long and 62.50 m high on five granite piers, 14,000 cubic metres of dressed blocks of 350 kg each. The deck came down in 1970 and only the piers stand. In April 1990 a suspended footbridge of 140 m was thrown out from the La Ferrière-Harang bank to a jump platform resting on one of the old piers, 61 m above the river, and the site opened to the public on 10 August 1990. It now runs as Skypark Normandie by AJ Hackett, with a 400 m zip line, two swings, a rail luge and a glass-floored belvedere.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Walk the 140 m suspended footbridge out from the La Ferrière-Harang bank to the jump platform built on one of Eiffel's surviving piers, and go off it on the elastic from 61 m above the Souleuvre
2
of 4
Ride the Scable, the giant zip line strung across the valley since 1999 — 400 m of cable at up to 100 km/h — and work out on the way down how much of the old railway alignment you are following
3
of 4
Walk the valley floor past all five granite piers, put your hand on one of the dressed blocks — 350 kg apiece, 14,000 cubic metres of them — and find the first span on the La Ferrière-Harang side, where the deck gave way on 12 June 1970, a day before it was due to be blown, setting off the charges early and injuring two workmen

of 4
For anyone not jumping, take the 1,000 m rail luge down one side of the valley, walk the barefoot trail through its Normandy textures, and stand on the glazed belvedere added to the jump footbridge in 2022 — floor included, so you look straight down the 61 m

Before you go
Everything here is ticketed and booked in advance: the bungee runs from about 55 to 145 euros depending on the package, with a separate under-18 rate, the giant swing from 46 euros and the zip line from 29. The site closes for winter, so check the season before travelling. Jumpers are weighed and age limits apply — book the luge and the barefoot trail for anyone who is not jumping rather than turning up hoping.
