Crazannes and Saint-Savinien: Puss in Boots' Castle and the Stone That Built Fort Boyard
200 + 100 XP
The château of Crazannes on the Charente, begun in the 14th century on the site of an 11th-century fortress whose chapel, moat and keep survive, is nicknamed the castle of Puss in Boots, and opens from April to October. Its quarries cut the stone of Fort Boyard and Fort Liédot, and are said to have supplied Cologne cathedral, though not — whatever the local story says — the base of the Statue of Liberty, which is Connecticut granite. The workings can be walked on a guided trail through a pôle-nature opened in 1997, and downstream Saint-Savinien, a petite cité de caractère, has its own quarries cut into the Chail cliffs.

Before you go
The château opens April to October only: 1pm to 6pm in April, May, June and September but closed Tuesday and Wednesday, 10am to 6pm every day in July and August, and 1pm to 5pm Friday to Monday in October. The visit is self-guided and takes about an hour, about 10 euros an adult and 6 for a child; guided tours only for groups of ten or more, booked ahead. The house also takes weddings and can shut at short notice — ring before you drive. The maison des Pierreux opens in summer only.
