Baccarat: The Crystal Museum, a Church of 20,000 Crystals and the Springs of Hercules
200 + 100 XP
Baccarat has had a glassworks since Louis XV authorised one in 1764 and has made crystal since 1817, and the museum in the château de la manufacture — the house the works' administrators lived in from the mid-19th century — shows 1,100 pieces made since then. The church of Saint-Rémy, destroyed in October 1944 and rebuilt between 1953 and 1957 by Nicolas Kazis entirely on the sign of the triangle, is glazed with 4,000 crystal slabs cut into 20,000 pieces in more than 150 shades set into concrete, which the source calls unique in the world. Across the Meurthe at Deneuvre, a Gallo-Roman spring sanctuary found in 1974 has yielded more than a hundred figures of Hercules — more than any other site in the Roman West.

Before you go
The museum of the Sources d'Hercule at Deneuvre opens weekends only from mid-April to late June and in September, every day in July and August, and not at all from October to April; entry is about 4.50 euros. The Musée du Cristal is ticketed and separate from the working crystal factory, which is not open to visitors. Saint-Rémy is free but the crystal only shows at its best in sunshine — go in the afternoon.
