Angoulême is the capital of comics, and its Musée de la bande dessinée, in the renovated Chais Magelis on the Charente across from the Vaisseau Moebius, holds more than 25,000 original pages and more than 250,000 printed books. Up on the plateau, muralists have painted comic-strip walls through the centre of town, the cathedral of Saint-Pierre was consecrated in 1128 and carries the Ascension and the Last Judgement across its west front, and the ramparts give a wide view over the Charente.

Required Activities

1

of 5

At the Musée de la bande dessinée in the Chais Magelis, work through the Trésors des collections show and pick the two original pages you would take home from the 25,000 the Cité holds

2

of 5

Find La Fille des Remparts on the boulevard Pasteur behind the covered market and work out where Max Cabanes's painted 120 m2 of rampart stops and the real rampart of Angoulême starts, then track down at least two more painted walls in the centre

3

of 5

On the west front of Saint-Pierre, consecrated in 1128, find Christ in Glory in his mandorla with the four evangelist symbols at the very top, then drop your eye to the carved frieze of hunting and battle scenes running the width of the front

4

of 5

Walk the ramparts round the plateau for the view over the Charente, and on the way find the 2.5 m bronze Corto Maltese of 2008 and Frank Margerin's Lucien, put up in 2020

Inside the cathedral, find the tomb of Jean d'Orléans, the Bon Comte, at the angle where the choir steps meet those of the south transept

Before you go

The Musée de la bande dessinée has no permanent display until 2027: until then there is one temporary exhibition drawn from the collections. Angoulême fills completely for the international comics festival at the end of January and for the Circuit des Remparts historic car races at the end of September, when the rampart streets are closed to traffic — book a pitch well ahead or avoid both weekends.
