Mieussy: The Birthplace of Paragliding
300 + 100 XP
In 1978 members of the Annemasse parachute club decided to take off from a mountain with their parachutes and chose the pointe de Pertuiset above Mieussy. André Bohn, a Swiss competition parachutist, set the first take-off up; Jean-Claude Bétemps tried it and put down at once on the slope, then Bohn flew the whole way to the valley floor and landed on Mieussy's football pitch. Gérard Bosson and other club members followed the next day and the days after. On 5 May 1979 Bosson, Georges Perret and Michel Didriche created the world's first paragliding club here, Les Choucas, which is still going at Mieussy, and paragliders are in the sky above the village all year.

Before you go
Tandem flights must be booked with a school in advance and are cancelled in strong wind, rain or low cloud — allow a spare day. The walk up to the Pertuiset take-off is a mountain ascent on unmade ground, and the slopes above the village are inside the Praz de Lys–Sommand ski area, under snow through the winter.
