Neuvic, Mussidan and Saint-Astier: A Renaissance Château's Botanical Park on the Isle and the Lime Caves

easy

200 + 100 XP

On the left bank of the Isle at Neuvic, a Renaissance château built between 1520 and 1530 by Jean I de Mellet, on the site of the Talleyrand-Périgord fortress before it, stands in a botanical park. Upstream at Saint-Astier, France's leading independent producer of natural hydraulic lime takes visitors through its underground quarries to see how lime is made, and downstream at Mussidan the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires du Périgord fills twenty rooms and more than 600 m² of the 18th-century chartreuse that Dr André Voulgre left to his native town in 1971.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Walk the botanical park down to the left bank of the Isle below the château and pick out three trees you cannot name, then find out from the gardeners which of them will not survive a Périgord drought — and if you are here on the last Sunday in April or the first Sunday in October, the park is holding its plant fair

2

of 5

On the guided run through the underground quarries at Saint-Astier, follow the lime from the rock face to the kiln and work out what makes this stone worth digging: the company is France's leading independent maker of natural hydraulic lime, and the galleries you drive through are where the limestone comes out

3

of 5

Work through the twenty rooms of the Voulgre museum and find the tools for a Périgord trade that has died out since the doctor collected them, then eat in the parc Voulgre outside and find the two maisons doubleaudes among the trees

4

of 5

Ride a stretch of the Via Eila, the Isle valley greenway whose Occitan name means the way of the Isle, between two of the three stops of the day, and count the water mills, dovecotes and covered wells that the valley is still full of

5

of 5

At Saint-Astier, find the fortified church and work out where the defences are: the tower, not the nave, is the strong part. Then look for the cluzeaux cut into the limestone round the town, the rock shelters the valley has used since long before anyone burned lime here

Before you go

The underground lime quarry at Saint-Astier only takes individual visitors on Wednesday mornings in July and August, so that is the window for doing the whole day as written. The botanical park and the Voulgre museum are open the rest of the year if you come outside it.

The Saint-Astier lime quarry takes individual visitors on Wednesday mornings at 9.30 in July and August only, by reservation on 05 53 54 13 85; it lasts an hour and a half, costs 5 euros for adults and 3 for children, and you drive through the galleries in your own vehicle — check the height clearance with them before bringing a motorhome, and ask about a lift in another car if it will not fit. Groups can book from May to August. The three stops are 6 km and 12 km from the pin along the Isle, whose valley floods, so keep off the low riverside ground in winter.
