Casteljaloux: The Spa Town in the Pines and the Lac de Clarens

Casteljaloux was the Albret stronghold of Protestantism on the edge of the Landes forest, and the future Henri IV used its château as a hunting lodge. In the 19th century its sulphurous and ferruginous waters won it such a name that the town was called Casteljaloux-les-Bains; the spa lapsed and was revived in the 20th century, and the Eurothermes centre now treats rheumatism and runs thermal pools for about 2,500 patients a year. In the old centre the 16th-century Maison du Roy, named for the supposed stays of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, holds the tourist office. Just outside the town the Lac de Clarens, 15 hectares with part of it given over to swimming and water sports, was dug from 1974 and opened in 1977 in the pines, with an 18-hole golf course, a tree-climbing site and a casino built partly on stilts over the water.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Take a session in the thermal pools at Eurothermes and taste or smell the water the town was once called Casteljaloux-les-Bains for — sulphurous and iron-bearing, and used here for stiff joints rather than for drinking

2

of 5

Go into the Maison du Roy, where the tourist office now is, and find the great chimneypiece in the exhibition room — then ask them which of the two kings the house is actually named for, because the claim rests on supposed visits by Louis XIII and Louis XIV rather than on any record

3

of 5

Walk right round the Lac de Clarens and find the two ends of a lake that did not exist sixty years ago: the inlet where the Baraton stream feeds it, and the outfall that runs off to the Avance. It was dug from 1974, finished in the drought summer of 1976 and opened in 1977

4

of 5

Walk the municipal park where Jeanne d'Albret and the future Henri IV were received and work out how much of their château is left: it was half pulled down in 1636 and the keep dismantled in 1653. Then find the surviving stretches of the 14th-century town wall, cut down more than once during the wars of religion

5

of 5

At the Clarens leisure base, climb the tree-top course in the pines above the lake, then walk out to see the casino built partly on stilts over the water and decide from the shore how much of the building is standing on the lake bed

Before you go

Most of Casteljaloux's listed buildings cannot be entered: the restored cloister has stood empty and for sale since a new care home opened in 2017, and the château in the municipal park is grounds only. The Maison du Roy can be reached because the tourist office is inside it, so check its hours. Thermal sessions at Eurothermes need booking ahead. Swimming at the Lac de Clarens is confined to the marked area and supervised in season only.
