Nogent-sur-Seine: The Musée Camille Claudel and the Château de La Motte-Tilly

Camille Claudel was twelve when her family moved to Nogent-sur-Seine in 1876 and they stayed three years, on the îlot Saint-Epoing in the old centre. She was already sculpting, self-taught, and it was here that her father asked the sculptor Alfred Boucher to look at her work; Boucher saw what she had and talked him into paying for lessons. The museum that opened on 26 March 2017 grew out of the Dubois-Boucher sculpture museum of 1902 and holds the largest body of her work anywhere, 43 pieces on show, among some two hundred 19th- and 20th-century sculptures in fifteen rooms. Less than 7 km south-west, on the left bank of the Seine, the Château de La Motte-Tilly was built from 1754 to plans by François-Nicolas Lancret for the Terray brothers, one of whom became Louis XV's controller-general of finances in 1769.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Work up to room 12 of the museum, where the portraits by Camille Claudel hang, and stand in front of La Valse in the room the whole building is built around, then go back and find Persée et la Gorgone, the piece the town bought in 2008 to start the collection

2

of 4

At La Motte-Tilly, find the parquet floors laid à la Versailles and the rooms where billeted troops burned them for firewood, then walk out and work out where the formal French garden ended and the English park of 1784 begins — the French part was put back only around 1910

3

of 4

Walk from the museum into the old centre to the îlot Saint-Epoing and find the house where the Claudels lived for three years, then trace on the ground the chain the museum's first room lays out: Marius Ramus, who came to Nogent in 1845 and employed Alfred Boucher's father as his gardener, then Paul Dubois, then Boucher, then Claudel

Walk to the far end of the park at La Motte-Tilly, down by the river, and find the ground where the moated feudal castle stood — it guarded a ford on the Seine a few hundred metres below, and its stone was reused in the 18th-century house you have just come out of

Before you go

La Motte-Tilly is under 7 km south-west of Nogent on the left bank of the Seine, so the two halves of this day are 6 km apart on opposite banks. Both the museum and the château have closing days and reduced winter hours, and the château's interior is seen on a guided tour at set times, so check both before you set out. The park at La Motte-Tilly is often open when the house is not.
