Langres: The Walled Town of Diderot and the Lac de la Liez
225 + 100 XP
Langres, on its spur above the plateau, is ringed by 3.6 km of wall built over two thousand years, with seven fortified towers, six gates and a Gallo-Roman gate from the city of the Lingones. Denis Diderot was born here on 5 October 1713, and for the centenary of his death in 1884 the town renamed the place Chambeau after him and set a bronze of the philosopher by Bartholdi at its centre — to loud protest in a conservative town that owed its standing to the church. The cathedral of Saint-Mammès is half-way between Romanesque and Gothic, drawing on the school of Cluny and on Gallo-Roman building, and carries a classical west front raised between 1760 and 1768. Below the town, the Lac de la Liez, biggest of the four reservoirs dug at the end of the 19th century to feed the canal, is the one visible from the ramparts and is laid out for swimming, pedalos, windsurfing, canoeing and water-skiing.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Walk the full 3.6 km circuit of the Langres wall and count off all seven fortified towers and six gates, finishing at the Gallo-Roman gate, then find the stretch from which the Lac de la Liez comes into view below the plateau
2
of 5
In the Maison des Lumières, find the 18th-century measuring instruments and the celestial mechanics among the science rooms, then hunt down a plate from the Encyclopédie showing a trade you can still name — and afterwards walk the streets of the old town where Diderot grew up, the son of a Langres cutler
3
of 5
Go into the cathedral of Saint-Mammès and find the two surviving hangings from the eight woven in 1544–1545 after Jean Cousin for cardinal de Givry, on the life of Saint Mammès — of the eight only three are left, and the third is in the Louvre — then step back outside and see how little the classical front of 1760 to 1768 tells you about the 12th-century church behind it
4
of 5
Walk down to the Lac de la Liez and follow the shore to the head of the dam, then look for where the water is drawn off for the canal de la Marne à la Saône — the lake was dug at the end of the 19th century to keep that canal in water, and swimming and boating came later
5
of 5
Find Bartholdi's bronze Diderot in the middle of the place Diderot, put up in 1884 for the centenary of his death, and then work out how far it is from there to the cathedral — the town fought hard against honouring an avowed atheist within sight of the church that had made it powerful

Before you go
Do not drive a motorhome inside the walls. Park at Sous-Bie below the ramparts and take the inclined lift installed in 1995, which runs up through the wall to the old town. The rampart walk is 3.6 km on the level once you are up there. The Maison des Lumières and the cathedral treasury have their own closing days and winter hours, and the beach and boat hire on the Lac de la Liez run in the bathing season only.
