Mont Cassel: Foch's Hill, the Castle Mill and the Musée de Flandre

Mont Cassel rises 176 m as a butte-témoin, a leftover of the Tertiary, and dominates the French and Belgian Flanders plain, though it is not the high point of the Nord — that is Anor at 270 m. Foch set up his headquarters in the town from October 1914 to April 1915, and his equestrian statue on the summit was unveiled on 7 July 1928 by President Raymond Poincaré. Beside it stands the Casteel Meulen: the 16th-century mill on the castle terrace burned in 1911 and the town's last mill, an oil press, burned in 1937, leaving nothing in a town that once had more than twenty, so in 1949 Cassel bought a ruined post mill at Arnèke, whose sails turned here again from 1983. On the cobbled Grand'Place the Musée de Flandre occupies the 16th-century seat of the châtellenie, the hôtel de la Noble-Cour.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Climb to Foch's equestrian statue, unveiled on 7 July 1928 by President Poincaré, and from the terrace pick out how far into Belgium you can see — this is the ground Foch directed from between October 1914 and April 1915, and the British ran the northern end of the Western Front from the same hill

2

of 5

Walk round the outside of the Casteel Meulen on the summit and work out how a post mill turns: the whole body pivots on its post so the sails can be swung into the wind, which is why there is no fixed door on the windward side. If it is one of the few weekends a year the mill opens, go up inside to the pair of stone millstones

3

of 5

In the Musée de Flandre, the departmental museum of art, history and folklore, find where the 16th-century fabric of the châtellenie's own building shows through the galleries, and pick the one Flemish painting you would take home

4

of 5

Find the memorial to the two battles of Cassel, in 1071 and 1328, and then the giant Reuze Maman, carved by the local painter and sculptor Alexis Bafcop in 1860 — Cassel was voted France's favourite village in 2018 and the giants are why

5

of 5

From the summit terrace and the public garden, scan the plain for the windmills still standing in the villages round about, and count how many you can find against the more than twenty Cassel itself once had, all of them now gone

Before you go

The Casteel Meulen on the summit opens only a few weekends a year after being closed for safety work; check with the Cassel tourist office before you count on going inside, and treat the climb, the statue and the garden as the certainties. The Musée de Flandre has its own closing day and winter hours. The summit is reached by steep cobbled streets that are hard work in a large motorhome; park below and walk up.
