Les Lucs-sur-Boulogne: The Historial of the Vendée, Solzhenitsyn's Memorial and Charette's Capture at La Chabotterie
225 + 100 XP
At Les Lucs-sur-Boulogne, the Historial de la Vendée, opened on 26 June 2006, tells 7,000 years of the département's story in ten rooms over nearly 3,000 m², and beside it the Mémorial de la Vendée — four blocks of dark quartzite, inaugurated by Alexander Solzhenitsyn on 25 September 1993 before 30,000 people — remembers the victims of the Infernal Columns and above all the massacre of 28 February 1794. The Chemin de la Mémoire crosses the Boulogne and climbs to the chapel of Petit-Luc, where 22 marble tables carry the victims' names, and about 7 km north-east, in the bois de la Chabotterie at Montréverd, a cross marks the spot where General Travot took Charette on 23 March 1796.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Work through the ten rooms of the Historial de la Vendée, which set out seven ages of the département over 7,000 years, and pick out which of its seven spaces holds the objects you would come back for — only 3,000 of the museum's 20,000 are on show at a time
2
of 4
Walk the Chemin de la Mémoire from the Mémorial over the footbridge across the Boulogne, past Pierre Culot's Mur calciné and La Déchirure végétale at the foot of the hill, then climb to the chapel of Petit-Luc and count the 22 marble tables of names of those killed on the night of 28 February 1794
3
of 4
At the Logis de la Chabotterie, walk out from the 16th-century Bas-Poitou house into the wood and find the cross that marks the spot where Travot's men took Charette on 23 March 1796

of 4
At the chapel of Petit-Luc, work out how much of the old church of Notre-Dame is left — only the choir survived 28 February 1794, and the chapel of 1867 stands on that footprint — and read the quotations from Jean Rivière and Paul Claudel set along the path below it

Before you go
The Historial's ticket office shuts 45 minutes before the museum does, so do not leave it to the end of the day; tickets can be booked online. The Chemin de la Mémoire is an outdoor walk that climbs a hill to the chapel and is not hard surfaced all the way. La Chabotterie is a separate site about 7 km north-east at Montréverd with its own hours, so check both before setting out.
