Nevers: Saint Bernadette, the Ducal Palace and the Blue of Nevers Faïence

Nevers keeps the body of Bernadette Soubirous, the seer of Lourdes, in a glass and bronze reliquary in the chapel of the convent of Saint-Gildard, where she spent thirteen years as a nun and died in 1879. The Ducal Palace of the 15th and 16th centuries, whose two big rear towers are the older part and whose grand stair the Clèves family slotted into the central turret, is reckoned the first of the Loire châteaux, and the town's museum of faïence shows the deep blue grounds that made Nevers the French capital of the craft. Up the Allier towards its confluence with the Loire, Apremont is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, with a floral park.

Required Activities

1

of 4

In the chapel at 34 rue Saint-Gildard, find the glass and bronze reliquary where Bernadette's body has lain since 1925, then go round the convent rooms and work out how a girl who came here at 22 and called herself an ordinary nun for thirteen years, until she died in 1879, was kept at arm's length from the pilgrimage she had started

2

of 4

Go up the Clèves family's grand stair in the central turret of the Ducal Palace, find the aquarium of Loire fish and the room that explains why a Formula 1 circuit sits beside a faïence town, then walk the tree-lined esplanade out from the front to where it overlooks the Loire

3

of 4

In the museum of faïence and fine arts, find a piece with the deep blue ground the Nevers makers called violet and we miscall Persian — the colour is in the body of the glaze, with Middle-Eastern flowers and birds painted on top — then find a blue-on-white Chinese-style piece from the Delft years after 1660, and work out which of the two was made for an aristocrat

4

of 4

Walk the single street of Apremont-sur-Allier, a village of 66 people that held 587 in 1861, from the château and its listed stables up to the floral park, and look for how far above the lane the houses are built — the Allier has flooded the commune badly three times since 1982

Before you go

The Parc Floral d'Apremont is a seasonal garden: open daily from the end of March to the first week of October, then weekends only to 1 November, and shut all winter, with the ticket office closed over lunch. Between November and late March the village is a walk and nothing more.

Nevers works all year. The museum of faïence opens every day but Tuesday, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm, late on the first Friday of the month and free on the first Sunday. The chapel at the Espace Bernadette is open daily, roughly 10h to 12h and 14h to 18h, and is a working religious house. The old town is steep and the streets round the ducal palace are narrow — park below and walk up.
