Val Joly, Trélon and Liessies: France's Largest Lake North of Paris, the Glassworks and the Abbey Park
225 + 100 XP
In the Avesnois, the Lac du Val-Joly, dammed from 1966 and filled in 1969, runs about 3,500 m through the woods at Eppe-Sauvage and at 180 hectares is the largest lake in Nord-Pas-de-Calais and the largest in France directly north of Paris. At Trélon a glassworks of 1823 survives almost whole, listed as a historic monument in 2023, and at Liessies the park of a Benedictine abbey founded in 751 keeps the waterworks the monks built, now part of the écomusée de l'Avesnois.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Walk or cycle part of the 19 km of shoreline at Val-Joly, following the drowned valley of the Helpe Majeure and its two side arms, the Orbay and the Voyon, out to the 315 m concrete dam at the far end and down to the foot of its 18 m wall
2
of 4
Go to the MusVerre at Sars-Poteries, ten kilometres west, which holds the largest public collection of contemporary glass art in France — more than 550 sculptures by about a hundred artists — and find the bousillés, the pieces the glassworkers of the village made for themselves in their breaks when two bottle works here employed more than 800 men
3
of 4
Walk the abbey park at Liessies and trace the monks' waterworks from the 5-hectare Grand étang down through the channels that fed the abbey, finishing at the Bûcher aux Moines in the middle of the park; the abbey church itself went in 1791, and the parish church down the road keeps what was saved from it
4
of 4
Walk the rue Clavon-Collignon at Trélon along the enclosure wall of the Parant glassworks, listed in February 2023, and pick out from the street the chimney, the gas producer and the great hall that still holds the Boëtius and Stein furnaces where the dark green bottle glass was blown

Before you go
The atelier-musée du verre at Trélon is closed for an indeterminate period after storm damage to its roof in June 2026, so there is no glassblowing to watch — ring 03 27 60 66 11 before you go, or use the MusVerre at Sars-Poteries instead, which is open all year except Mondays. Even in a normal year the Trélon site runs 1 March to 30 November only, closed Mondays.
Do not swim in the Lac du Val-Joly outside the supervised bathing area: the lake is classed as hypereutrophic, has had cyanobacteria blooms, and swimming can be suspended at short notice. The path round the lake and the 48-hectare abbey park at Liessies are open in any season, and the Avesnois is wet underfoot in winter.
