Saint-Lizier: Two Cathedrals, a Romanesque Cloister and the Bishops' Pharmacy
225 + 100 XP
Saint-Lizier, the old seat of the bishops of Couserans on the Pyrenean piedmont way to Santiago, has two former cathedrals. Saint-Lizier, built in the 11th century and consecrated in 1117, keeps 12th-century frescoes and a cloister of thirty-eight marble columns — the only cloister still standing in the Ariège — and both have been UNESCO-listed with the routes to Santiago since 1998. Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède stands inside the bishops' palace begun by Bernard Coignet de Marmiesse, bishop from the mid-17th century, now the departmental museum of the Ariège, and keeps paintings of the end of the 15th century on its walls and vaults. In the Hôtel-Dieu, a pharmacy of 1764 still has its Louis XV cherry and pear woodwork lined with jars.
Required Activities
1
of 5
In the apse of the cathedral of Saint-Lizier find the 12th-century frescoes uncovered in 1960, attributed to the workshop of the Master of Pedret, a Catalan painter who worked over the mountains in the Pallars and the Val d'Aran, and the 13th-century Christ in majesty in the half-dome above them
2
of 5
Walk all four galleries of the cloister — the only one still standing in the Ariège and the only one in the department with its four galleries complete — and count the thirty-eight marble columns, alternately single and double, reading the sculpture on their capitals; then find the two tombs, Auger II de Montfaucon of the 14th century, dug up here during restoration in May 1877, and Hector d'Ossun, the bishop who held the town against the Huguenots
3
of 5
Go into Notre-Dame-de-la-Sède in the courtyard of the bishops' palace and look up: the painting of the end of the 15th century runs across the walls and over the vaults, restored in recent years — then work up through the four floors of the departmental museum around it, from the Roman town to daily life in the 19th century
4
of 5
On the guided visit of the Hôtel-Dieu pharmacy, untouched since it opened in 1764, find the Louis XV cherry and pear woodwork running round the walls, the earthenware jars and blown-glass bottles still on the shelves, and the surgical instruments beside them — the saws and the tourniquets
5
of 5
Walk round the outside of the cathedral's east end and find the Roman stone in it: three flat faces built with big Roman ashlar and antique marble robbed out of the town wall. Then follow the 740 m of Gallo-Roman rampart round the upper city, and down on the bridge over the Salat find the Gallo-Roman inscription to the goddess Belisama

Before you go
The Hôtel-Dieu pharmacy can only be seen on a guided visit, set departures only: several a day from mid-morning in high summer, otherwise 11 h and 15 h, booked in advance, with no visit on Sunday and Tuesday mornings or on public holidays. Adults 7 €, children 4.80 €. The cloister and cathedral are open every day of the year, 9 h to 18 h, and can be walked round on your own; guided tours of the cloister and the bishops' treasury run in the French school holidays. The departmental museum in the bishops' palace keeps its own museum hours. The cité is at the top of a steep, narrow hill — park in the bourg by the river.
