Louhans: The Monday Poultry Market, the 157 Arcades and the Hotel-Dieu Apothecary

Louhans has held its Monday market since the town's charter of franchises of 1269, and it is still one of the biggest live-poultry markets in France. The Grande Rue runs for 157 arcades under 15th-century facades, and the Hotel-Dieu of 1682-1686, now a museum, keeps an apothecary lined with Hispano-Moorish lustreware of the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1984 the Ecomusee turned the works of the local paper, L'Independant du Louhannais et du Jura, into a printing museum on the spot, without the paper stopping.

Required Activities

1

of 3

Get to the Monday market early and find the agricultural part on the Place du Champ-de-Foire, where about a hundred small producers sell live birds and animals, and pick out AOC Bresse poultry among the cocks, chicks, geese, pigeons, rabbits and ducks

2

of 3

Walk the Grande Rue end to end under its 157 arcades, eleven more than the arcaded street at Lons-le-Saunier, and find the Maison du Bailli of the 1570s under one of the first arches at the town-centre end

3

of 3

Find the Tour Saint-Pierre on the line of the old northern rampart, the military bastion built in 1570 and restored in 1998, and from it work out where the walled town's three gates stood

Before you go

The market is held on Monday mornings only. The Hotel-Dieu can be seen on guided visits only, closed on Tuesdays and closed altogether in January and February. The Musee de l'imprimerie, the old works of L'Independant du Louhannais et du Jura, is closed for accessibility works until the start of 2027.
