Villars, Puyguilhem and Saint-Jean-de-Côle: The Little Blue Horse and a Renaissance Hunting Lodge
225 + 100 XP
At Villars in the Périgord Vert a cave discovered in 1953 holds glittering formations and Palaeolithic paintings found from 1958, drawn in manganese oxide — among them the little blue horse the cave is known for. Close by stand the Château de Puyguilhem, a modest Renaissance house built from 1513 as a hunting lodge in the style of the Loire châteaux, and Saint-Jean-de-Côle, one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France.
Required Activities
1
of 3
Tour the Grotte de Villars, 13 km of galleries found in 1953, and get the guide to put the lamp on two things: the little blue horse, drawn in manganese oxide, and the panel where a man and a bison run together — the same subject as the Shaft at Lascaux, and the reason this cave is dated to the early Magdalenian
2
of 3
Visit the Château de Puyguilhem and find 1524 carved into the frieze of the stair turret — the end of the first building campaign, begun in 1513 for Mondot de La Marthonie, first president of the Paris parlement, who died at Blois in 1517 before he could live in it — then walk the park to the dovecote
3
of 3
Walk through Saint-Jean-de-Côle over the bridge on the Côle and round the square between the two buildings the village grew from: the 11th-century priory church that started with sixteen Augustinian canons, and the château de la Marthonie built beside it in 1083 to guard the crossroads to Thiviers and Brantôme

Before you go
The Grotte de Villars is open 1 April to the end of the All Saints holidays and shut all winter, and in October it only opens in the afternoon. The Château de Puyguilhem stays open through the winter but on a Wednesday-to-Sunday week and a split day, 10h-12h30 and 14h-17h30, so Mondays and Tuesdays are out from October to March. Saint-Jean-de-Côle is a free village walk in any month.
