Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and the Aveyron Gorges: Canoes, the Roc d'Anglars and the Castles of Penne and Bruniquel
300 + 100 XP
Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val keeps a viscontial palace built in 1125 that became the consuls' house in 1313 and is reckoned the oldest town hall in France, below the limestone cliffs of the Roc d'Anglars. Downstream the Aveyron cuts its gorge between the ruined castle of Penne on its rock and the two castles of Bruniquel.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Find the Maison Romane of 1125 in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, built for a lord named Archambault and the consuls' house from 1313 — reckoned the oldest town hall in France — and look at the carving on its façade, a programme about dispensing justice rather than governing a town, and at the wing Viollet-le-Duc rebuilt from 1846
2
of 5
Paddle the Aveyron downstream from Saint-Antonin towards Penne, swim from one of the shingle beaches on the inside of a bend, and look up from the water for the castle standing on its pinnacle above you
3
of 5
Climb the via ferrata on the Roc d'Anglars above Saint-Antonin, or walk up the path to the clifftop instead and scan the face with binoculars for the peregrines that nest on it and close the route each spring, with the paragliders launching from La Bicyclette beside you
4
of 5
Climb to the castle of Penne, built to the exact shape of a jagged pinnacle more than 120 m above a bend of the Aveyron, held for the Cathars against Simon de Montfort's men and left in ruins for 450 years — and see how far the current restoration has got up the walls
5
of 5
Visit the two castles of Bruniquel side by side on a cliff 90 m above the Aveyron — the 13th-century Château Vieux and the Château Jeune built from 1485 to 1510 by a cousin who had bought half the lordship — and find the damage in the knights' hall of the old one, left by three centuries of feuding between its Catholic owners and the Protestants next door

Before you go
Two of the five activities have no winter version. Canoe hire on the Aveyron at Saint-Antonin runs from May to the end of September, and the river beaches are a summer swim, not a February one. The châteaux de Bruniquel open daily from 1 April to mid-November and are shut the rest of the year. The forteresse de Penne is the odd one out and keeps a winter window, open daily from 20 December to 4 February but closed 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January, and shut altogether from early February to the end of March. The via ferrata on the Roc d'Anglars is on wet limestone in winter; the walk up to its viewpoint is the safer option out of season.
The Roc d'Anglars via ferrata closes for the peregrine falcons' nesting season in spring, and at night, and there is no equipment on site — bring your own or hire harnesses and lanyards in the village beforehand. Check with the Saint-Antonin tourist office before you go. Canoe hire on the Aveyron runs in the warm months and needs enough water in the river.
