Nyons: Black Olives, the Roman Bridge and the Last Scourtin Maker
200 + 100 XP
Nyons, sheltered in the valley of the Eygues, is the home of the protected black olive and its oil — the tanche, the local variety that takes frosts of minus ten degrees and was still all but wiped out in the winter of 1955-56 — and the growers' cooperative, Vignolis, has pressed their olives since 1923. The town's medieval bridge, inaugurated in 1409 by the bishop of Vaison, crosses the river in a single arch of about 40 m standing more than 18 m above the water, and the Scourtinerie, founded in 1882, still weaves the fibre mats once used in the olive presses.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Visit the Vignolis cooperative in Nyons, founded in 1923, walk its olive museum and taste AOP Nyons olive oil
2
of 4
Cross the Pont Roman at Nyons, one arch of about 40 m thrown more than 18 m above the Eygues and inaugurated in 1409, and work out from the stonework where the toll tower once stood at its middle and the redoubts that guarded each end
3
of 4
Watch a scourtin being woven at the Scourtinerie in Nyons, the last workshop in France still making them, on machines the Fert family has run since 1882 — and find the ones now woven as floor mats and table rounds rather than press filters
4
of 4
Walk the Promenade de la Digue to the old mills of the 18th and 19th centuries at the foot of the Pont Roman and follow the oil through them — millstone, press, then the settling to part the oil from the water — then go next door into the 1730s soap works and find the tanks for the lye and the vats that held the lamp oil

Before you go
The Alicoque, Nyons' festival of the new oil, falls on the first Sunday in February on the Place des Arcades; the fête de l'olive piquée, when the first picked olives are tasted, is the weekend before Christmas.
The Musée de l'Olivier at Espace Vignolis is free to walk round on your own; guided tours run only from mid-June to mid-September and must be booked. The Scourtinerie opens Monday to Saturday, 9.00-12.30 and 14.00-18.30 from April to September, closing at 18.00 in winter, and both are shut on Sundays.
