Lac du Der: The Cranes and the Timber Churches of Champagne

The Lac du Der-Chantecoq drowned the three villages of Chantecoq, Champaubert-aux-Bois and Nuisement-aux-Bois, and when it was inaugurated on 3 January 1974 its 48 km² made it the largest artificial lake in mainland France by area, though not by volume. Between 200,000 and 350,000 common cranes pass through each year and 20,000 to 30,000 stay the winter; on 3 November 2019 volunteers counted a record 268,120, beating the 206,582 of 11 November 2014. Round the lake stand the timber-framed churches of the pays du Der, built in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Be on the dyke before first light between October and February and watch the cranes lift off their roosts on the water in waves — 20,000 to 30,000 winter here, and on a November peak day the count has gone past a quarter of a million

2

of 5

Sit out an hour in the hides at Chantecoq and at Champaubert and work through the other water birds on the lake's list of more than 200 species — grebes, pintail, pochard, curlew, storks — while you wait for the cranes

3

of 5

Start the timber-church route at Châtillon-sur-Broué, one of the oldest in the Perthois along with Outines, and find its double-pitched bell tower standing on a porch; the 16th-century glass inside was destroyed by a hurricane in 1973, so what you see is 19th century. Then go into at least one more along the route

4

of 5

Walk or cycle a stretch of the 20.3 km of dyke that rings the lake, from Giffaumont-Champaubert round towards the Chantecoq site, and pick out Chantecoq — the lake's only true island — from the top of the bank

5

of 5

Walk out to the church of Champaubert standing alone on its peninsula, all that is left in place of the three drowned villages, then go to the Village Musée du Der at Sainte-Marie-du-Lac-Nuisement to find the timber church of Nuisement-aux-Bois, the school-and-mairie, the smithy and the dovecote, taken down and rebuilt there before the water came up

Before you go

Most cranes pass through in October and November, and 20,000 to 30,000 stay the winter.

The timber-framed churches do not all open the same way: several are 1 March to 30 November, or Easter to All Saints, or summer weekends only, with out-of-season visits by appointment through the village mairie — but four or five are unlocked every day all year, so pick those two for a winter trip rather than driving the whole route and finding doors shut. The tourist office's route leaflet lists each church's hours and the mairie number to ring.
