Giverny: Monet's Water Lilies and the Japanese Bridge
225 + 100 XP
Claude Monet lived at Giverny from 1883 until his death in 1926 and made his garden the subject of his last great paintings: flower beds round the pink house with its green shutters, and across the road a water garden with water lilies under a Japanese bridge he had painted green. The house and gardens open from April to November, and the Musée des impressionnismes 350 m up the village street, opened in 2009, stages exhibitions on Impressionism.
Required Activities
1
of 5
Go through Monet's house and find, in the chrome-yellow dining room, the blue-toned Japanese prints he hung there out of a collection of nearly 250 ukiyo-e — one of them a Great Wave off Kanagawa — then the kitchen next door, tiled in Rouen blue and white
2
of 5
Cross the green Japanese bridge Monet built in 1895 over the pond he had dug from a diverted arm of the Epte, and find the wisteria on it — kept from Monet's own planting when the rotted bridge was rebuilt to the same design
3
of 5
See the current exhibition at the Musée des impressionnismes, which took over in 2009 from the museum of American art the Terra Foundation ran here from 1992, and walk Mark Rudkin's garden of hedged colour rooms outside it
4
of 5
Cycle from Vernon to Giverny, about 5 km along the greenway, and finish on the chemin du Roy — the lane that ran between Monet's flower garden and the land he bought on the far side for the water garden
5
of 5
Walk up the village to the cemetery beside the church of Sainte-Radegonde to find Monet's grave, and stop at the old Hôtel Baudy and its rose garden, where the American painters who followed him to Giverny put up

Before you go
Monet's house and gardens open on 1 April and shut for the winter on 1 November.
The house and gardens open 1 April and shut for the winter on 1 November, 10h to 18h with last admission at 17h30; book online, because the property is the second most visited site in Normandy after the Mont-Saint-Michel and the queue at the gate is long by mid-morning. The Musée des impressionnismes runs its two exhibitions from late March to early November.
