Tournus, Brancion and Chapaize: The Romanesque Heart of the Mâconnais
225 + 100 XP
Monks fled Noirmoutier with the relics of Saint Philibert in 836 and wandered for nearly forty years before Charles the Bald gave them Tournus on 19 March 875. The church they built there has a two-storey narthex of three naves on each level, a choir consecrated in 1019 and another by Pope Calixtus II in 1120, and a nave whose walls carried only a timber roof until it was vaulted about 1240 with the transverse barrels it is famous for. In the hills west, the village of Brancion stands on its spur below a castle, and Saint-Martin at Chapaize raises a 35 m Lombard bell tower over one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Burgundy.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Work through Saint-Philibert from the crypt, where Saint Valerian's body was put in 979 to settle a quarrel between two sets of monks, up into the narthex and the Saint-Michel chapel above it, then out to look at the Clocher rose that Count William IV of Mâcon added in ornate late Romanesque and under which he was buried in 1224
2
of 4
Walk through the medieval village of Brancion on its spur and visit its castle, begun in the 10th century
3
of 4
Find the statue-column high on the north face of Chapaize's 35 m tower, one of the oldest known anywhere in the West, then go inside and look up through the lantern under the dome — among the earliest in this part of France — at a church begun after the Lombard master-builder William of Volpiano came through in 1021
4
of 4
Walk right round the outside of Chapaize and see that there is no roof timber anywhere: the stone laves are laid straight onto the vaults. Then stand at the four round piers under the tower, which were taken apart in 1954 and rebuilt in reinforced concrete with every original stone put back on the outside

Before you go
Saint-Philibert at Tournus is a parish church, free and open daily, but the crypt and the upper narthex chapel are not always unlocked, so ask. Chapaize is unstaffed; Brancion's castle is privately run with its own season and hours, and the lane up to the village is narrow with limited parking.
