Rochechouart: The Meteorite Crater, the Castle Museum and the Roman Baths of Chassenon
275 + 100 XP
Nearly 207 million years ago an asteroid a kilometre and a half across hit the ground at La Judie, in Pressignac, at about 20 km/s, gouging a crater some 19 to 23 km wide that took in the site of Rochechouart. Erosion has erased every trace of it from the landscape, so this was the first impact structure on Earth identified purely from what the shock did to the rocks. The shattered rock, impact breccia, went into buildings all over the district, and 50 hectares of it have been a national nature reserve since 2008. The town's castle, mostly 15th-century, has held the Haute-Vienne museum of contemporary art since 1985, and five kilometres north-west at Chassenon the Gallo-Roman baths of Cassinomagus still stand seven metres high in places.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Go through the Maison de la Réserve – Espace Météorite Paul Pellas in Rochechouart, then go out and find the impact breccia for yourself: it makes up the cliff under the castle and is built into house walls all over the town
2
of 4
In the Château de Rochechouart, find the salle des chasses with its early-16th-century polychrome stag hunt painted round the walls and the salle d'Hercule in grisaille from fifty years later, then work through the Raoul Hausmann Dada collection and the contemporary rooms the museum has held since 1985
3
of 4
Walk the 12,500 m2 of the baths of Longeas at Cassinomagus, among the most important in Gaul, and find where the walls still stand seven metres high, then follow the two separate loops through them — the therapeutic circuit on the south side and the hygienic one on the north, used for ritual washing before entering the temple of Montélu
4
of 4
Walk the rest of the 20-hectare monumental enclosure at Chassenon, from the octagonal temple of Montélu west of the baths to the amphitheatre, and count the seven cart passages built between the arches of the aqueduct on the south-east side

Before you go
The Maison de la Réserve – Espace Météorite Paul Pellas, 16 rue Jean Parvy, runs weekday afternoons only from October to March and closes from mid-December to mid-January. Do not take rock away: collecting any rock or mineral inside the astrobleme reserve has been forbidden since the 2008 decree.
