Biscarrosse: Seaplanes, Lakes and the Atlantic Dunes

Between the wars Biscarrosse's lake was a seaplane base where Latécoère built and tested its flying boats and where Mermoz and Saint-Exupéry flew. A Musée de France on the old Latécoère site now tells the story of world seaplane flying, with aircraft from 1912 to the 1980s, and between the ocean dunes and the pine forest lie the clear lakes of Cazaux-Sanguinet and Biscarrosse-Parentis.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Visit the Musée de l'Hydraviation on the old Latécoère base by the Lac de Biscarrosse-Parentis, where seaplanes from 1912 to the 1980s stand in the hall in various stages of restoration, and work out from the models how a Laté 521 — 49 m across the wings and carrying 70 passengers — got off this lake

2

of 4

Drive the 7 km out to Biscarrosse-Lac and swim, paddle or sail on the Lac de Cazaux et de Sanguinet from the harbour at Maguide or Navarrosse, on one of two inland lakes here that each cover more than a thousand hectares

3

of 4

Cycle a stretch of the Vélodyssée through the pine forest from Biscarrosse

4

of 4

Walk west out of Biscarrosse across La Montagne, the line of old wooded dunes the Gascons called the mountain and which gave the town its name, to the Atlantic beach at Biscarrosse-Plage

Before you go

The Musée de l'Hydraviation closes for the whole of January and opens Wednesday to Sunday afternoons for most of the year, daily 10h to 19h only in July and August. Biscarrosse-Plage is an open Atlantic beach with strong currents: swim between the flags at a supervised beach in season, and not at all outside it.
