Annonay and Peaugres: The Montgolfiers' Town and the Drive-Through Safari
250 + 100 XP
On 4 June 1783 the paper-makers Joseph and Étienne de Montgolfier sent up the first public hot-air balloon from the place des Cordeliers in Annonay. Just outside the town, the Safari de Peaugres holds about 1,000 animals of 127 species across 80 hectares, half of it walked and half driven through.
Required Activities
1
of 3
Drive the car circuit at the Safari de Peaugres, open since 1974, through two African savannahs and past bison, black bears and a polar bear — 140 animals of 20 species — then walk the foot park, where the glass tunnel runs under the big cats' enclosures
2
of 3
Stand on the place des Cordeliers in Annonay, the exact spot the Montgolfier brothers launched the first public balloon on 4 June 1783 in front of the estates of the Vivarais, then find the monument to Marc Seguin, Annonay's other inventor, unveiled by President Millerand in 1923
3
of 3
Visit the Musée des Papeteries Canson et Montgolfier at Vidalon in Davézieux, the family's own mill, where on 14 December 1782 the brothers privately floated a big paper bag lined with cloth over a fire of wet straw and wool — the first montgolfière — and see how the paper it was made of was produced

Before you go
The Musée des Papeteries Canson et Montgolfier opens Wednesday and Sunday afternoons for most of the year, and every afternoon in July and August only; it closes over the Christmas and New Year period. The Peaugres car circuit is driven in your own vehicle, with windows kept shut in the animal enclosures.
