The Pointe du Raz is a rock prow 72m high facing the raz de Sein, the current between the headland and the island of Sein 8 km out, watched over by the automated lighthouses of La Vieille and Tevennec. Classified in 1987 and given the Grand Site de France label in 2004, it was then so worn out by visitors that its hotels and shopping precinct were demolished and the heath replanted; the label now covers 8,700 hectares of coast across five communes.

Walk the 800m from the Maison de site out to the semaphore at the tip, and as you go work out that the hotels and the whole shopping precinct stood on this ground until 1996 and 1997 - the heather you are walking through was put back afterwards; from the end, look out over the raz de Sein to La Vieille and to the island of Sein

Find the statue of Notre-Dame des Naufrages, Our Lady of the Shipwrecked, that Cyprian Godebski carved at the very end of the summit plateau beside the semaphore, and look down from it into the race below

Before you go
Parking at the Pointe du Raz is charged, and the only bus, BreizhGo line 53B, runs on Saturdays with a dial-a-ride service the rest of the week.
The point is a 72m cliff with unfenced edges and no shelter; in a gale the spray comes over the plateau. Keep to the marked paths, which also protects the replanted heath.
The coast path from the Baie des Trepasses to the Pointe du Van runs along the cliff top with long unprotected drops and no water or shade.
