Bonaguil and the Lot Valley: France's Last Great Fortress, Gavaudun and Puy-l'Évêque

easy
history

Berenger de Roquefeuil spent thirty years turning Bonaguil into a fortress for the age of artillery, with 104 gun embrasures in a 350m outer wall - and it guards nothing: no town, no river crossing, no valley, no trade road. He wrote that he did not fear the king of France's troops if they cared to besiege him. Nobody ever did, and the castle was lived in until the Revolution. Round it, Gavaudun's 13th-century keep stands on its rock, Fumel's castle, now the town hall, looks over the Lot from its terraced gardens, and Puy-l'Eveque climbs its promontory above the Cahors vineyards.

Required Activities

1

of 5

At the Chateau de Bonaguil, stand at the sharp north point of the 13th-century keep, its masonry over three metres thick and set at 65 degrees to face the ridge an attack would come from, then count gun ports along the 350m outer wall Berenger de Roquefeuil threw round it, one of the 104 he had cut for the guns

2

of 5

Climb to the 13th-century keep of Gavaudun on its rock pinnacle above the Lede, then walk down the valley to the ruined priory of Saint-Sardos de Laurenque with its dovecote and ground-floor bread oven

3

of 5

Walk the terraced gardens of the Château de Fumel, now the town hall, for the view over the Lot

4

of 5

Walk the lanes of Puy-l'Évêque, the medieval town on its promontory above the Lot and the Cahors vineyards

of 5

Cross the barbican bridge at Bonaguil and notice that it turns ninety degrees halfway, built with that kink so no battering ram could be run at the gate; then find the well sunk 48 m down a natural fissure in the courtyard, and the gun casemate at the bottom of the great ditch, reached only through a cave that runs right under the castle

Before you go

Bonaguil is open daily in season but closes for about a month from early January to early February; winter hours are short. Adult entry is 10 euros, children 6 to 12 five euros, under 6 free.

The castle is a steep climb with stepped walkways, a deep rock ditch and an underground passage - torch useful, and not suitable for a pushchair.

The approach lanes to Bonaguil and Gavaudun are narrow with tight bends and low branches; leave a long motorhome in the lower car park at Bonaguil.
