Landes de Gascogne Dark Sky Reserve: Marquèze and Solférino
275 + 100 XP
The pine forest of the Landes stretches flat and dark across the Gascon plain: 974,000 hectares of it, the largest planted forest in western Europe. In February 2025 the regional park was labelled an International Dark Sky Reserve with a core zone of 945 km², the only lowland reserve of its kind in France, with nothing in it higher than 145 m. At Sabres a hundred-year-old train is the only way in to the open-air museum of Marquèze, and 13 km west, Solférino was built on land Napoleon III bought in 1857 out of his own pocket to run farming trials on; the village became a commune in 1863, named for the battle of 1859.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Leave the van in the free car park at the old Sabres station and take the Train des Résiniers, the only way in, out to the Marquèze quartier in the middle of the forest; walk the whole hamlet and find, building by building, what a Landes farm of the 1800s had to be able to do for itself, then come back on a train whose time you have checked, because there is no other way out
2
of 4
Find a break in the pines inside the 945 km² core zone of the reserve, kill the headlights and give your eyes twenty minutes, then photograph the Milky Way — this is the only lowland dark sky reserve in France, and with nothing above 145 m anywhere in it the horizon stays dark all the way round
3
of 4
Walk the single street of Solférino from end to end and count the houses of the imperial estate — 38 were built, 28 of them for the farm workers, who lived rent-free with a plot in return for 75 days' work a year and could own it after ten years — then finish at the church of Sainte-Eugénie with the presbytery and the mairie round it, exactly where the plan of 1863 put them
4
of 4
Take the road west from Sabres to Solférino and read the forest as the piece of engineering it is: pines sown in straight lines behind wide firebreaks, the pattern imposed after the August 1949 fire killed 82 people and left half the massif burnt by 1950, all of it drained by the ditches Henri Crouzet cut — the same engineer Napoleon III put in charge of Solférino, who drained 20,000 hectares and built 428 km of roads. Count the firebreak crossings between the two villages.

Before you go
September is the one month with nights long enough for the Milky Way while the Marquèze train is still running; the écomusée closes at the end of September and does not reopen until April.
Marquèze opens from 1 April to late September only, and the écomusée train from the old Sabres station is the only way in and out - check the last return departure before you go, and note that the car park and ticket office are at 500 route de Solférino in Sabres. The Landes forest is under a graded fire-risk regime with five levels: in summer, access to forest tracks can be restricted or banned outright, and open flames are never allowed. For the night activity, park on a public surfaced pull-in, not on a forest track or a firebreak, which must stay clear for fire vehicles.
