La Roque-Gageac to Beynac: The Dordogne by Canoe

medium
adventure

300 + 100 XP

The stretch of the Dordogne between Beynac and La Roque-Gageac runs past the castles and cliff villages of the Périgord Noir. The Château de Beynac stands on its cliff above the river, the fortress of Castelnaud across the water holds the Museum of Medieval Warfare, and La Roque-Gageac is built against the cliff face, with traditional flat-bottomed gabares taking visitors out. Above it all, the boxwood gardens of Marqueyssac look down on the river.

Required Activities

1

of 5

Paddle the Dordogne downstream from La Roque-Gageac to Beynac, passing under the cliff village, then the boxwood terraces of Marqueyssac on the right bank, and finally between the two rival castles — Castelnaud on your left and Beynac on the cliff above your right

2

of 5

Visit the Château de Beynac, the medieval castle on the cliff above the river

3

of 5

At Castelnaud, find the full-size siege engines rebuilt in the grounds — trebuchet, mangonel, bricole, couillard — and work out which of them could actually have thrown a stone as far as Beynac across the river; inside, the war museum holds 300 weapons from the 13th to the 17th century, the second collection of its kind in France after the Musée de l'Armée

4

of 5

Take a gabare out from La Roque-Gageac, then climb the lanes behind the quay into the exotic garden the south-facing cliff makes possible — palms and bananas under a Périgord limestone face — and scan the rock above for the peregrines it has been protected for since 1990

5

of 5

Walk out along the hand-clipped box of Marqueyssac — planted by Julien de Cerval after 1861 and still cut by hand — to the belvedere 130 m above the river, and name all five places you can see from it: Beynac, Fayrac, Castelnaud, La Roque-Gageac and Domme

Before you go

Canoe hire on this reach is one-way downstream with a minibus back; hirers stop running when the Dordogne is high, and the low ground at La Roque-Gageac along the D703 floods — seven declared flood events since 1982, the last in 2021. The D703 through both villages is narrow and walled in summer traffic, so a long van is easier parked once and left. Marqueyssac takes 220,000 visitors a year and its car park fills by late morning in August.

Canoe hire on this reach of the Dordogne is a summer business — the Beynac hirers run roughly May to September, and no one puts boats on the water between November and March. The gabares at La Roque-Gageac run 1 April to 31 October. Beynac, Castelnaud and Marqueyssac stay open through the winter, so the castles are still a day out when the river is not.
