Château-Thierry: Champagne Cellars, La Fontaine and Belleau Wood
225 + 100 XP
Château-Thierry sits on the Marne, and Champagne Pannier ages its bottles in medieval quarries cut into the valley side, which the house bought in 1937 and built its offices over. The ruined castle stands above the river behind the Porte Saint-Jean, and Jean de La Fontaine was born here in 1621 in a 16th-century town house that is now his museum. At Belleau, just to the north, the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery lies at the edge of Belleau Wood, where US Marines fought through June 1918 — the French Sixth Army ordered afterwards that the wood be called the Bois de la Brigade des Marines in all official papers, and it still is.
Required Activities
1
of 4
Tour the Champagne Pannier cellars in Château-Thierry, the 13th-century chalk cellars carved under the town
2
of 4
Start at the Porte Saint-Pierre, the last of the town's four medieval gates and the one Joan of Arc rode through in 1429 to drive the English out, then take the long stair up from the place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville and go into the castle by its main gate, the Porte Saint-Jean, for the view down the Marne valley
3
of 4
Go into the 16th-century town house on the Grande Rue where Jean de La Fontaine was born in 1621, now a Musée de France, and find how many different illustrated editions of La Cigale et la Fourmi the collection holds — the fable the town has been living off for three hundred years
4
of 4
Walk up from the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery into the wood itself and find the name the French Sixth Army gave it after June 1918 — Bois de la Brigade des Marines — then work out from the ground how a brigade could lose nearly 60 per cent of its strength, a thousand dead out of eight thousand, in twenty-six days taking a wood you can cross in twenty minutes

Before you go
Champagne Pannier is open Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 6pm, and closed every Sunday and public holiday of the year — book the cellar tour and do not plan this day on a Sunday. The US Marines send a delegation to Belleau every Memorial Day and every 4 July, when the cemetery is busy and partly given over to ceremony.
