Monthermé and the Dames de Meuse: The Ardennes Rock Ridges

hard
adventure

400 + 100 XP

Monthermé grew up on both sides of a meander of the Meuse where the Semoy comes in, deep in the Ardenne between plateaus that rise to 487 metres; in 2024 it came fifth in France's favourite-village contest. Above the confluence, at about 400 metres in the state forest of Château-Regnault, is Roc la Tour — columns of quartzite said to be the ruins of a Devil's Castle, and one of the oldest visited places in the region: traces of the first travellers, found there in the 1970s, go back about 15,000 years. It was listed as a natural site by order of 20 August 1935, on artistic, picturesque, scientific, historical and legendary grounds. Downstream at Laifour the rock ridge of the Dames de Meuse stands over the river.

Required Activities

1

of 4

Climb through the state forest of Château-Regnault to Roc la Tour at 400 m and stand among the quartzite columns that the legend says are all the devil left of a castle he was building in a night, when a cockerel crowed too early and he smashed it in a rage — protected since 20 August 1935 on criteria that include the legendary

2

of 4

At Roc la Tour, pick out the three quartzite tors, each seven to eight metres high, and the wall of ten to fifteen metres beside them, then find the flat ground where Jean-Georges and Colette Rozoy dug the camp that a dozen people used at the end of the last ice age — the traces found here in the 1970s are about 15,000 years old

3

of 4

Climb the left bank above Laifour to the Dames de Meuse and count the three beech-covered rock humps at about 400 m that the legend says are three unfaithful wives turned to stone on the day Jerusalem fell to the First Crusade — look across to the hamlet of la Petite Commune on the Revin bank while you do it

4

of 4

Walk up to the Croix Sainte-Anne to look straight down on the Semoy joining the Meuse, then go on to the Roche aux Sept Villages and see whether you can pick out all seven, and to the Roche à Sept Heures for the loop of the Meuse and the slate beds in the outcrop under your feet

Before you go

Both climbs start at river level near 127 m and finish near 400 m, so this is nearly 300 m of ascent twice, on paths of loose schist and, at Roc la Tour, a boulder scree at the foot of the rock. The Dames de Meuse are reached from Laifour, six kilometres downstream of Monthermé, not from Monthermé itself — plan to move the van between the two.
