Frías is legally a city and has a few hundred inhabitants, which makes it one of the smallest in Spain. It sits on a rock above the Ebro with a castle on the highest point of it and houses built out over the edge on wooden props — the casas colgadas, hanging houses, which are what the place is known for. Below the town a medieval bridge crosses the Ebro with a fortified gate tower in the middle of it, which the town used to charge tolls at. The whole thing was protected as a historic ensemble.

The town is steep with unguarded edges above the rock. Northern Burgos winters are hard.
