César Manrique was born in Arrecife on 24 April 1919, exhibited abroad, and came home for good in 1966 just as tourism was arriving on Lanzarote. What he did next shaped an entire island: he made the volcanic landscape itself the architecture. Jameos del Agua, built from his idea in 1968, is a collapsed lava tube turned into an auditorium, pool and garden. The Mirador del Río, finished in 1973, is cut into a 479-metre cliff and is invisible until you are inside it. He died in a car crash on 25 September 1992, near the foundation in his old house at Taro de Tahíche that had opened that March.
