Ordesa: The Faja de Pelay and the Cola de Caballo

Ordesa was made a national park by royal decree on 16 August 1918, three weeks after Covadonga, which makes the two of them the first in Spain. The Ordesa valley is a glacial trench with vertical limestone walls a thousand metres high, and the Faja de Pelay is a ledge path running along the face of one of them. Above it Monte Perdido reaches 3,355 metres — the highest limestone massif in Europe. The park joined the French side of the range as the Pyrénées–Mont Perdu World Heritage Site in 1997.

Before you go

Private vehicles are banned from the Ordesa valley in high season — a shuttle runs from Torla. The higher routes hold snow into July and the weather turns fast.
